Art at the Straube Center

Friday, May 7th, 2010

After a brutal experience hanging 32 pieces of mine yesterday, some of my photographs will be on display at a student show at the Straube Center for the next month and a half. Forever linked to nature, these images represent three different series, “Living in Malaysia,” “Collecting Raindrops,” and “The Frog Pond.” The opening reception is tonight, May 7th, from 7 – 9 pm in Pennington, New Jersey.

Although other half of Daughter Earth, Katy, can’t be there, she has had the experience with me in most of these photographs, “Gabili’s Smile,” being her favorite.

“Gabili’s Smile,” Living in Malaysia, Digital Color Print, $65

Both Kate and I, along with another fellow traveler, were with our favorite jungle expert, Gabili, on a night trek. We were all determined to find a tarsier, knowing very well if anyone could find one for us it would be Gabili. The trek went on for awhile, and we saw a ton, but were on our way out when we all saw Gabili’s smile – we knew he had found a tarsier. This little critter was absolutely adorable and not as timid as I was expecting. With the small size I would have thought it would have instantly leaped away, but I was able to take some beautiful portraits of him before he disappeared in the jungle.

A few more images on display of mine:

“Never Far Away,” Living in Malaysia, Digital Color Print, $65

“Eyos’ Hands,” Living in Malaysia, Digital Color Print, $65

“Untitled (5),” Collecting Raindrops, Digital Color Print, $45

“Untitled (6),” Collecting Raindrops, Digital Color Print, $45

“Submersion,” The Frog Pond, Digital Color Print, $55

“Submersion (2),” The Frog Pond, Digital Color Print, $55

Sea Mammal Habitats

Jill Bliss and Jennie Smith Sea Mammals

Habitats Within

Top: Southern Sea Otter by Jennie Smith.   Bottom:  Sea Lion by Jill Bliss.

I love artwork about the relationship between animals and their habitat.  These two great works are by two of my favorite artists.  Both sea mammals are textured with images from the habitat they live in.  There habitat, is actually very close to my habitat!  Both live in Northern California, so I get to see them in the wild, which is always exciting!

Sarajo Frieden

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

I cannot remember exactly how I stumbled upon Sarajo Frieden’s website, but I knew I’d love her work the second I saw her beautiful homepage.

I really love her embroidered pieces!

And I love nothing more than artwork of crazy little cities growing on trees….

Isn’t there something fabulous about these two pieces? They look like some kind of magical adventure.
You can view more of her work from Poketo or Lila Rogers Studio.

Can’t Sleep

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

It’s another one of those nights where I wake up way too early and then just have too many ideas running around in my head and can’t seem to fall back asleep.   Then it finally get’s to the point where I am just like – well I may as well get up and do some of this work or something.   So I got out of bed at 3:30 am today.

Anyone else have this problems?

Any ideas of how to get over it?
